Event 2 - Discussion on Generative Art and Architecture

Discussion on Generative Art and Architecture | Casey Reas & Mario Klingemann: Generative Systems for Art

I attended the “Discussion on Generative Art and Architecture” with Casey Reas and Mario Klingemann, and it really helped me connect what we’ve been learning in class to real-world creative work. The event took place in a big hall with a stage, and the atmosphere felt both welcoming and inspiring. Seeing the speakers in person and hearing them talk about their work made the ideas from our course come alive for me.

During the talk, Reas and Klingemann explained how they use computer code and algorithms to create art and even influence architecture. This matched perfectly with our lessons about generative systems, where you set up rules or a process, and then let the computer or system create something new, often with surprising results. For example, they showed how randomness and patterns can work together, which helped me better understand the balance between control and unpredictability in generative art.

The visuals they shared were amazing. There were colorful geometric shapes, network diagrams, and even some organic-looking forms (see the photos I took below). These artworks helped me see how generative art can be used not only for pictures, but also for designing spaces and patterns in architecture. I’m now excited to try using some of these ideas in my midterm and final projects, maybe by using code to create patterns or experimenting with randomness to see what new designs I can discover.

I highly recommend this event to my classmates. It’s a great way to see how the topics we study are used by real artists and designers, and it gave me lots of creative ideas. If you want to see how technology and art can work together and get inspiration for your own projects, this event is definitely worth attending.
