WEEK 1 - Two Cultures

Hello everyone! My name is Francesca, and I’m excited to join this course and explore the concept of "Two Cultures" as introduced by C.P. Snow and expanded by Victoria Vesna. As someone with interests in both the arts and sciences, this topic feels deeply relevant to my academic path and personal aspirations. I’m currently studying sociology, which often requires me to navigate between creative expression and technical precision. This course offers an opportunity to better understand how these two worlds intersect and how we can build bridges between them.

After reviewing Snow’s The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution and Vesna’s Toward a Third Culture: Being in Between, I was struck by the idea that artists using technology can act as mediators between the humanities and sciences. Vesna’s perspective on creating a “third culture” resonated with me because it emphasizes collaboration and mutual respect across disciplines. Her discussion of artists using scientific tools to foster dialogue inspires me to think about how my own work could contribute to bridging this divide.

At UCLA, I see these two cultures reflected in the campus environment. The science departments often feel isolated from the arts, yet there are spaces like the Design Media Arts program where technology and creativity merge beautifully. This perspective has shifted my thinking, encouraging me to look into interdisciplinary approaches in my studies and projects.

These ideas benefit me by opening my understanding of collaboration across disciplines that are very different, which I can apply both as a student and in future career paths. Whether designing interactive installations or working on research-driven projects, I hope to integrate insights from both cultures to create meaningful work that breaks traditional boundaries.

  1. Hi Francesca,
I really enjoyed reading your take on Snow and Vesna's ideas! I found it interesting how you connected the "two cultures" to your own academic experience—especially your point about feeling pulled between creativity and scientific structure. I can relate, as I’ve also struggled to find that balance in my own studies. You mentioned that collaboration can help bridge the divide—do you have any examples in mind of projects or fields where you've seen this happen successfully? I'm curious how this looks in action outside of academic theory. Looking forward to hearing more about your experiences as the course continues!

  2. Hi Francesca!
I really liked your reflection on the intersections between the arts and sciences, especially how you tied it into your sociology background. I totally agree with your point about artists using technology to bridge disciplines. Vesna’s idea of a “third culture” also stood out to me because it made me think about how roles like UX designers, science communicators, or even data journalists are modern examples of that mediator role. Do you think there are other departments or programs on campus that could benefit from more of this kind of integration? I'd love to hear your thoughts on how we could encourage more collaboration across North and South Campus beyond just the classroom. Look forward to talking to you more this quarter :)
